Overview:-


Gangtok is the capital of the mountainous northern Indian state of Sikkim. Established as a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the 1840s, the city became capital of an independent monarchy after British rule ended, but joined India in 1975. Today, it remains a Tibetan Buddhist center and a base for hikers organizing permits and transport for treks through Sikkim’s Himalayan mountain ranges.

DAMODAR ROPEWAY

The ropeway extends from the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology to the Secretariat. You get a spectacular bird's-eye view of the entire city from the cable car.



SIKKIM BHUTAN TREK

It is approximately a 20 days trek which includes staying overnight in camps and visits to various places like Buddhist monasteries. You will get to walk through a beautiful rhododendron forest and a scenic pasture.



PARAGLIDING

Take the opportunity to get a bird's-eye view of the breathtaking Himalayan range as you fly over it in your glider.



YAK RIDE

The Tsomgo Lake, where you can experience a yak ride, is located 35 km away from Gangtok at a height of 12,310 feet. You can take a ride around the lake or up the mountain.



The nearest airport to Gangtok is in Bagdogra, West Bengal which is around 124 km away. From there, you can hire a shared taxi or a private vehicle to get to Gangtok (in 2 hours).




The nearest railway station is in New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri which is about 148 km away from Gangtok. From there, it takes about 5-6 hours by taxi or bus to reach Gangtok.




The easiest way to reach Gangtok is by bus. The government buses arrive and depart from the Sikkim Nationalized Transport Station on Palzor Stadium Road and private buses from the bus stop at National Highway 31A.

 




NAMGYALYAL INSTITUTE OF TIBETOLOGY

Located in a traditional Tibetan-style mansion, it showcases the collections related to the Vajrayana Buddhism and Tibetan culture like Buddhist manuscripts, thangkas (Tibetan cloth paintings), thöpa, etc.



ENCHEY GOMPA

The lovely monastery decorated with beautiful murals and statues of Tantric deities is buzzing with activity every year in December/ January for the colourful masked and costumed Chaam dances.



HIMALYAN ZOOLOGICAL PARK

It is among one of the nicely-maintained zoos in the country expanding over a large area with a cafeteria in the premises. Red pandas, civet cats, Himalayan bears, clouded leopards and snow leopards can be sighted here.

These superb viewpoints in Gangtok will give you picture-perfect views of the city and the mountains surrounding it along with the availability of hot tea and snacks. For the best view of the Khangchendzonga, head to the Tashi Tok.
